Gestalten is an independent publishing house based in Berlin, Germany.

Gestalten was established by three friends: Robert Klanten, Markus Hollmann-Loges and Andreas Peyerl, who all moved to Berlin in the early 1990s.[2] They rapidly came into contact with the Berlin techno and rave scene, initially designing flyers, posters and record covers for music labels and events such as the Love Parade. In 1994, they conceived a book about techno-art, documenting the visual aspects of technoculture.

In order to gauge the market interest, they started to produce order cards, to be distributed through techno magazines. They received over 1000 orders, through which they were able to obtain a loan, which facilitated the production and release of their first book, The Localizer 1.0. This led to the foundation of Die Gestalten publishing house in 1995. The name was later changed to gestalten. The word means to shape, or to create in German.

Gestalten has been led solely by Robert Klanten since the departure of his co-founders Markus Hollmann-Loges and Andreas Peyerl in 2008. The company remains independent, with investor MairDumont and Klanten holding 50% of the shares each.

This is guaranteed by its renowned founders and honorary members – also including legendary international photographers such as Prof. F. C. Gundlach, Peter Lindbergh, Sarah Moon and Oliviero Toscani.

Based on high aesthetic quality requirements, we have been representing the interests of our members for more than 50 years. In this context, tradition and vision have formed a creative symbiosis at the BFF from the very outset. Today our focus is no longer solely limited to classical photography. The Association is also concerned with the creative possibilities of the new visual media and with digital imaging.

In 2013, the BFF Association of Freelance Photo Designers (“BFF Bund Freischaffende Foto-Designer”) became the BFF Professional Association of Freelance Photographers and Film Creators (“BFF Berufsverband Freie Fotografen und Filmgestalter”).
In order to do justice to the requirements of a changed marketplace, the BFF opened its ranks to film creators and to new members from the field of professional photography. Since then the membership structure of the BFF has been expanded (student, junior, member and professional) and the BFF offers new services. This has served to considerably enhance the relevance and the profile of the Association once again and membership is on the increase.

The members of our Association are personalities who think conceptually and do not only pick up trends and styles of contemporary photography, but actively characterize and structure them. We represent freelance photographers and film creators who personify the type of creative irreverence that is necessary to make images unique. The works of our members therefore make a fundamental contribution towards determining the visual appearance of the most renowned magazines and the most exciting commercials and web campaigns.

With its active publicity work, portfolio shows, conferences and regional meetings, the BFF is additionally intent on accompanying and energetically promoting discussions on the future of photography. We are actively concerned with preserving the economic and working conditions of our members and advise them on all questions relating to image protection, copyright, tax law and on the law relating to social security insurance for artists. The Association meets its own high quality requirements by staging exhibitions with a large media impact, series of events such as “Aufschlag”, “JUMP” or “BFF TRIEBWERK”, the BFF publications, highly frequented online media and renowned competitions. Currently, the BFF Magazine Award is setting new standards for professional photography. At a consistently high level it has its sights set on all those professionals who wish to go a step further in their work. Our Association thrives on the enthusiasm of its members and the strong BFF regions.

The BFF is thus a professional association with the highest degree of professionalism and an extraordinarily creative quality. It is this combination that continues to make us unique in Europe.

European Month of Photography - EMOP Berlin. Seit 2004 stellt Deutschlands größtes Fotofestival alle zwei Jahre die ganze Bandbreite historischer und zeitgenössischer Fotografie in Berlin vor. Museen, Kulturinstitutionen, Galerien, Projekträume, Botschaften und Fotoschulen in Berlin und Potsdam präsentieren zahlreiche Ausstellungsprojekte und Veranstaltungen, ausgewählt von einer Fachjury. Die Formate reichen von Ausstellungen im Außenraum und großen Museumspräsentationen, über Einzel- und Gruppenpräsentationen in Galerien und Projekträumen bis zu beeindruckenden Beiträgen vieler ausländischer Kulturinstitute und Botschaften sowie der städtischen Kunst- und Kulturämter.

2016 fanden erstmals zum Auftakt des Festivals die EMOP Opening Days in Kooperation mit der C/O Berlin Foundation im Amerika Haus statt, die in 3 Tagen mehr als 10.000 Besucherinnen und Besucher anzogen. Wegen des großen Erfolges fanden sie 2018 erneut bei C/O Berlin statt.

Die diesjährige Ausgabe des EMOP Berlin wird am 1. Oktober in der Akademie der Künste am Pariser Platz zusammen mit der zentralen Ausstellung KONTINENT - Auf der Suche nach Europa der Fotoagentur OSTKREUZ eröffnet.
Die EMOP Opening Days finden ebenfalls dort statt und werden in Kooperation mit der Akademie bis zum 4. Oktober ein vielfältiges Programm für die Fotocommunity und alle Fotografie-Interessierten bieten.

Das Projekt EMOP Berlin - Euopean Month of Photography 2020 wird gefördert vom Europäischen Fonds für regionale Entwicklung (EFRE) und der Senatsverwaltung für Kultur und Europa.

Was ist Glück? Ist es möglich, einen derart flüchtigen Moment auf Bildern festzuhalten? In welchen Situationen können wir Glück erleben? Als immer wiederkehrende positive Erfahrung im Alltag, in der Liebe, als Utopie und Traum, in einer Strophe unseres Lieblingsgedichtes, im Extremen unter Adrenalin, als zu konsumierendes Produkt, in einer Gemeinschaft? Kann Fotografie Glück konservieren? Das Thema „Glück“ ist schwer zu fassen. Doch genau das macht es so interessant.

Diesen Fragen sind 30 Fotografen nachgegangen, darunter Namen wie Felix Holzer, Hans-Jürgen Burkard, Olaf Hauschulz, Klaus Mellenthin, Michael Schnabel und Jörg Steck. Die Ergebnisse ihrer Arbeiten zum Thema „Glück“ werden am 16./17. September 2017 (jeweils 10-18 Uhr) im Rahmen des Herbstrundgangs der Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei im Studio Freiraum West (Halle 18) ausgestellt.

Im Vorfeld gab es eine bundesweite Ausschreibung des BFF, an der sich alle Mitglieder beteiligen konnten. Anschließend kuratierte eine interne Jury die Arbeiten. Als Maßstab war eine fundiert künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema „Glück“ angesetzt. Es durften sowohl Einzelbilder als auch Serien eingereicht werden.

Die Rundgänge der Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei ziehen zu jeder Veranstaltung über 15.000 Besucher an. Hier arbeitet die Crème de la Crème der international bekannten Neuen Leipziger Schule mit Vertretern wie Neo Rauch und Hans Aichinger. Künstler und Galerien aus aller Welt reißen sich um Ausstellungsflächen zu den Rundgängen. Die Spinnerei liegt im Leipziger Stadtbezirk Lindenau im Westen der Stadt.
